First came airlines, then hotels, then pet stores. If any kind of membership club or loyalty program is offered--for Free of course--join it. Why? because you will eventually get Free trips, hotel rooms and pet toys (my dogs are insatiable).
Unless you are permanently traveling you can't rack up enough points to earn a freebie but look for for a credit card connected to a good awards program. Rummage among the offers until you find one that gives you a nice packet of miles for applying. Stick to using that card and you will find yourself flying to Japan (as we did) on mileage. We flew through United www.united.com/web/en-US/content/mileageplus/default.aspx. You may have to pay for a few flights first but be patient--your freebie is waiting.
My favorite hotel program is Starwood Hotels Preferred Guest program with its affinity Amex credit card www.starwoodhotels.com/preferredguest/index.html.They are generous with free nights, and even better, will also give you a room for a fee plus fewer points. They don't charge for using your points as many programs do, or for changing around. I should know as I view my initial reservations as simply my opening offer.
Here's the key--even if you're not sure you will use your hotel chain again, join the program. It costs nothing and you get to stand on shorter lines. Also, you may find that they will give you a higher floor or a a nicer room. The same goes for airline loyalty programs. Join any airline's program whenever you take a flight. There's no triumph like that of my nephew--himself a Master of Miles--who announced that his family's trip--flights and hotels, was completely paid by miles. And he's not even retired yet.
