All that sitting down is now behind you, so to speak

Ah, exercise. If you have managed to sustain and use a gym membership, I have nothing but (somewhat skeptical) admiration for you. For those of us who avoid running, spinning and reps of all kinds, the answer is--walking. With a human or canine partner
(dailymail.co.uk) or your Ipod, go for a walk and see the city; take a different route daily--New York is the best place in the world to find new stuff on every block. In addition to city walks, explore the new docks along the Hudson and finish at the Pier Cafe near 70th St. But if you must go to a gym, check out the West Side YMCA membership for 65+ which falls under the heading of Relatively Cheap at $75/mo and has two pools, albeit cold. www.ymcanyc.org/westside/pages/membership.

If you have the courage to wear padded underwear or shorts, consider the bicycle--the outdoor kind. I pulled out my beautiful old Raleigh, a senior citizen herself,
(sheldonbrown.com) and with the help of a low cost tuneup and a lower seat to accommodate my slightly lower stature, I have started riding again. Try Eddie's Bicycle Shop on Amsterdam near 84th St.
eddiesbicycles.net/‎. Their prices are reasonable and they are non-judgmental.Riverside Park from 83rd to 93rd is completely flat and very wide--my kind of terrain. My modest goal is to be able to make the turns at each end.
